Wednesday 17th March marked Swallowing Awareness Day 2021. To raise awareness for Dysphagia, everyday throughout March we have been sharing facts surrounding the condition. You can see our calendar of facts: https://www.condovercollege.co.uk/swallowing-awareness-calendar-march-2021/

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we moved our Swallowing Awareness Day to Friday 26th March. For CCL’s Swallowing Awareness Day, our team mixed thickener into their drinks all day. The aim was to give our team a better insight into how drink thickener works and the impact it makes on a person’s drink – comprehending the change in texture and taste.

Laura, our Lead Speech & Language Therapist, set up ‘The Lockdown Arms’ bar and brought in a variety of drinks, including Nosecco (0% prosecco), 0% Heineken, summer-fruits squash, orange juice, pineapple juice, Dr Pepper, hot chocolate, Sprite, Pepsi and coffee. The reviews were mixed but overall, it was agreed that the thickener worked better in drinks with more flavour, and this would be considered more when providing thickened drinks for our residents who live with Dysphagia.  Interestingly, the orange and pineapple juice proved least popular.
