At Condover College, Supported Internships are more than work experience — they are a crucial step for young adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in transitioning from education to employment. Designed for learners working at Entry Level 1–2 with moderate to severe learning difficulties, the programme focuses on unlocking each intern’s potential in real-world settings.

A Pathway to Employment
Most interns begin their journey through our Employability Pathway, where they explore various work environments, gain personal and workplace skills, and start identifying their career aspirations. This prepares them for the one-year Supported Internship Programme, where they spend three days a week in tailored work placements and two days in college, supported by a dedicated team of Job Coaches, specialist tutors, and therapists.

Programme Highlights:
• 3 days weekly in meaningful, carefully chosen work placements with employers
• 2 days in College, building work readiness and life skills
• One-on-one support from Job Coaches including travel training where appropriate
• Access to speech and language therapists, and other professionals
• Opportunities for multiple placements to enhance employability or volunteering potential

Specialist staff use vocational profiling to match students with local or national employers based on their interests and strengths.

Benefits for Everyone Involved
For students, the internships often mark the first time they’ve felt truly independent and capable. Early nerves are replaced with pride as they take on real responsibilities, contribute to the workplace, and grow in confidence.

Parents witness profound changes — from increased self-esteem to a stronger sense of responsibility — and view the programme as an essential step into adulthood. At Condover College, we help alleviate the anxieties parents face when their young adult completes their Internship and leaves College by providing vital support for them to continue working.

Employers report rewarding experiences with Interns bringing fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and dedication. Many employers highlight the inclusive culture this fosters and the positive feedback received from both staff and customers.

Terry our Job Coach Co-ordinator said, “We are proud and grateful to collaborate with many local companies who provide valued opportunities for our Interns to experience the world of work, in the same way as their non-disabled peers. Our success stories from this programme are testament to the power of working together to support young people with SEND shape their futures.”
