Monday 21st – Sunday 27th February is #YouCanCareWeek hosted by Home Instead.

#YouCanCareWeek is all about shining a spotlight on the incredible people working in the care sector and encouraging others to join.

To celebrate You Can Care Week 2022, we wanted to take the opportunity to share some stories from our wonderful CCL team members.

Celebrating Mark Wiggin

Today we are celebrating Mark Wiggin who is Lead Support Worker at our Welwyn scheme. Joining CCL in July 2016, Mark began as a Support Worker.

So, what did Mark do for a living before working in care? Prior to working at CCL, Mark was a Police Officer for Staffordshire Police. For many years, Mark worked as a Family Liaison Officer, supporting families who had lost a loved one in distressing circumstances. For the last 18 months of his Police career, he worked as an Investigator within the Custody Investigation Team.

So, why did Mark move into care? After six months of retirement, Mark decided he was ready for another challenge! During his time as a Police Officer, he always tried to make a positive and constructive difference to the lives of others, and so saw supporting adults with learning disabilities a good match for him.

On asking Mark what he likes about his job, he said “I love being able to put a smile on the faces of the young people we support, and to give them the opportunities to have new experiences and interests. For example, before the Covid lockdown, I regularly took some of our residents to play tennis at sessions arranged by Telford Tennis Centre specifically for people with Down Syndrome.  I’m looking forward to being able to resume more varied activities now that Covid restrictions are being relaxed.”

A huge thank you to Mark for sharing his story with us and a big thank you for all of his hard work and dedication to CCL!
